Undergrad
My name is Erin Abbott. I was raised in New Jersey and went to college at Syracuse University where I earned a Bachelor's Degree in both Mathematics and Psychology. While at Syracuse, I had the opportunity to be a major participant in research involving risk factors for developing Alzheimer's Disease. This study was published in the Journal of the Alzheimer's Association. I also became an active member of Alpha Phi Omega, a co-ed community service fraternity. Through this, I was able to serve the local community as well as participate with other organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, The Boys and Girls Clubs, ASPCA, and Relay for Life. |
Grad School
After graduating from Syracuse, I continued my education at the University of Maine at Orono where I earned both my State of Maine Teaching Certification and my Masters Degree in Secondary Education, specializing in Mathematics. Upon graduation, I was inducted into Pi Lambda Theta, an education honor society. |
Life After Grad School
After graduating from UMaine, I spent two years at Old Orchard Beach High School where I taught several levels of math and was the assistant coach for the 7th grade girls' softball team. After teaching for two years, I took a year off to travel the world. Once planting my feet back on US ground, I was lucky enough to get a job at Windham High School. I have been teaching all levels of math at WHS for the past 10 years and spent a bit of time as the head coach for the Freshmen Girls' Lacrosse Team, the WMS Swim Team, and was the assistant coach for the WHS Swim Team. I have since become an active member of the Association for Women in Math, earned my graduate certificate in Instructional Design from the University of Wisconsin-Stout, became a certified Google Educator, and am currently the curriculum co-leader for the math department. Interests & Other Things I am married with two children and two cats. I am a hockey fan (go Devils!), am an official bbq judge for the Kansas City Barbeque Society, and I LOVE classic rock. Some of the bands/artists I've seen in concert include: Eric Clapton, Paul Simon, The Moody Blues, Jethro Tull, Styx, Elton John, Guns N Roses, Joe Walsh, Boston, ZZ Top, Steve Miller Band, Neil Young, The Who, and David Crosby. I love learning about math, psychology, neuroscience, and other cultures. Besides teaching young people math, my biggest goal is to teach people to be kind, open-minded, humble, grateful, and caring towards everyone. |
